Ultra Violet announced as the Pantone colour of 2018
Earlier this month, Pantone announced the 2018 Colour of the Year, and we couldn’t be happier with the news!
Every year, the Pantone Colour Institute releases their defining colour for the year ahead, usually emulating current or emerging trends in the world of design and beyond. This year, Pantone unveiled 2018’s official shade: PANTONE 18-3838, more commonly known as Ultra Violet.
Deeper than the predecessors, Pantone described the blue-based colour of 2018 as “dramatically provocative and thoughtful.” The colour follows 2017’s “Greenery,” a vibrant, fresh and revitalizing hue that reflected new beginnings, and 2016’s soft and gentle “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity” combination.
The versatile purple hue “takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute explains. “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet.”
Often associated with mindfulness and refuge from an over-stimulated world, Ultra Violet is both complex and contemplative. According to Eiseman, “Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”
Ultra Violet in Home Décor and Interiors
The colour of the year is supposed to provide “strategic direction” for the world of products and design, but, according to Pantone Colour Institute Vice President, Laurie Pressman, it’s about much more than that.
In interiors, Ultra Violet can transform a room into one of extraordinary self-expression or, conversely, can tone down a room with subdued, modern pairings. Adding spice and brightness, Ultra Violet calls attention to a tufted couch, piece of art or accent wall. As a colour that can take you in so many directions, Ultra Violet makes a statement in any space, whether it’s one of tradition and elegance or unexpected boldness.
